St Gregorys Bedale

Family Worker

Hi, I’m Michelle Dearlove and I became St. Gregory’s Family Worker in January this year. Here are some of the things I’ve been up to:

SCHOOLS
I’m currently working with Lara Pike at Bedale Church of England primary school where they’ve recently erected a Spiritual Garden and are keen for this area to be accessible to the pupils.  Lara’s been instrumental in its design and has a clear vision of how she perceives it will be. She’s formed a Spiritual Garden Group and I currently go in on a fortnightly basis to help lead this initiative. During craft sessions we’ve made disciples which were used to illustrate a Morning Assembly, Prayer Pebbles and Charcoal Crosses.  From an ecumenical perspective, it’s hoped Methodist Minister Reverend Kathleen Wood will do alternative weeks at the School.

Pupils from Mowbray School came into church over the course of a day in March as a familiarisation exercise. Refreshments were provided as well as the chance for them to dress up in some vestments on loan and I wore my Reader robes.  As a result of their visit there’s a possibility that I’ll be working in the school in April.

NURSERIES
I have monthly meets with Bedale Day Nursery on Leeming Industrial Estate, alternating between church and nursery.

Pre-school learners have been to St. Gregory’s to follow our Teddy Bear Trail, listen to Bible stories, share in hospitality and the Grace and draw pictures of their visit and their favourite things. These pictures went on display next to the Children’s Area in church. I also went to the nursery during Holy week to talk to them about Easter.

L.I.G.H.T. CHURCH
Sessions take place in Chantry Hall from 2 p.m. till 4 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month with crafts, praise and the sharing of food, and Mission, our Team God puppy, has also been known to attend!

I also have many future activities in mind, including:

  • After school homework group.
  • Youth Choir
  • Drama Group
  • Baptism Family Tea Party
  • Holiday Group

Volunteers are always needed, so if you feel you can help in any way or have ideas you would like to discuss or share, please contact me at michelle@bedale.church
